Covid affected every individual in a unique way. This is also true when it comes to me recording music. With my band The Jane Doe’s, it was a very collaborative experience in the studio, working through songs, arrangements and production. One of my reactions to the isolation that Covid created was to really dive in to learning production software so 「Ache for Strange」 was a result of me by being myself and creating, for the most part an acoustic album to get to learn the digital landscape. Then 「Tremblin‘」is what happened as I tried to bring in more and more production to the songs. For both albums, I had help at times like Keven Semanski mixing the albums and different players coming in once in a while and contributing their creative energy, but with the exception of a few amazing artists, I played, wrote and produced both albums. In a way, Covid forced me into learning much more about digital production, which I am thankful for and these albums are the result of that.
A number of years ago when recording 「sea of sin」 in Nashville with Keith Gattis producing…Keith, though he was a great guitar player himself, wanted a ripping guitar sound on a dramatic song I wrote called 「Chill」. So he called Audley, who Keith had played with in Sheryl Crow‘s band, to come in and record a bit. Since then, I remain friends with Audley and his wife, Jen Gunderman, who is an amazing keyboard player and also played accordion on 「sea of sin」. On my most recent album, 「Tremblin‘」, the song now you know is an intense stripped down emotional song that I wrote about a friend who has passed. The song is kind of a conversation between me and my friend who has passed and I immediately thought of Audley’s guitar as the perfect ripping voice in a call and response to the vocal. I gave him a call, sent him the live tracks, and he sent me two or three live tracks that I edited together, and I was done… Always very easy to work with such a masterful player.
The simplest answer is that Keith had an amazing sense of what imperfect sounds were really cool and would always fight to keep these imperfections in the recordings to make the record special. This was a great production lesson for me, especially in today’s world when one has unlimited digital manipulation power And most songs on the radio and that you hear in general, are over quantized and over tuned digitally, taking out the authenticity and depth of the recording.
As a solo artist, I feel I am making music inside my bubble. Sometimes this can create very authentic music, but sometimes the lack of different filters can produce ideas that should not make it to a final album lol. That said with a band there are a lot more personalities to juggle, but you also have good energy and lots of filters to bounce ideas off of… so I think the end product in terms of recording can be much more consistent than when you’re doing it solo.
《Sea of Sin》里的《Center Of The Universe》;
《Ache for Strange》里的《Something Bad》——不过我和即将一起来中国的阿根廷节奏组新乐队,给这首歌编了更有波莱罗风情的版本,我们可能会重新录制;
最后在《Tremblin’》里,《Now You Know》和《Just Another Day》都非常贴合我当时的心境。
This is difficult since one’s emotional, mental and general state in the world changes frequently… At least mine seems to. I think the songs that I write in different times reflect the experience of that time. I guess a few songs that stand out that capture specific moments in time for me would be 「Center Of The Universe」 that I recorded on 「sea of sin」, something bad that I recorded on 「Ache for Strange」…however I think my new band, with the Argentinian rhythm section that is coming to China, created a better arrangement with the bolero feel for the groove so we may be re-record that one… And lastly on 「Tremblin’」, I would say that now you know, and 「just another day」 definitely matched my mood of the day.
One experience was while signing autographs, a 32-year-old man waited in a line for an hour and a half to tell me that 「Quiet Inside」 and some other songs got him through two years of depression… As the Music Therapist I always thought that I had to be in the room to really use music as medicine And that experience open my eyes to the power of what listening can do.
My expectation for the coming tour is to hopefully sing and play beautiful music with some old and some new friends.
