自首张专辑《Mirrored》以来，Battles 就以出色的器乐和充满想象力的写作在乐迷们脑海里留下了深刻的印象。这支由吉他手兼键盘手 Ian Williams 与鼓手 John Stanier 组成的乐队，在与中国大陆阔别 16 年后与闪千手合作，再次来到中国进行他们的亚洲巡演——赶在巡演前，UPEE 有幸邀请 Battles 进行一期专访，成员 John 回答了我们的问题，分享 Battles 的创作以及对亚洲巡演的期待。
UPEE：在创作的过程中，乐队是否会注重音乐的类型化/流派化？
John：当我们写音乐时，我完全不会觉得我们是在为某个特定流派创作。当然，我们会受到来自当下以及过去许多事物的影响，但我们有始终努力让音乐作品尽可能保持原创性和流派的流动性。
When we write music I definitely do not think we consider we are writing music in one specific genre. Of course we are influenced by many things from the present as well as the past, but we try to make our musical output as original and genre fluid as possible.
UPEE：两位乐队成员在 Battles 之前都有在其他乐队里演奏的经历，也让乐迷们发现你们二人身上都有投入在不同流派里的背景——例如 John 之前在 Alternative Metal 的 Helmet 里作为成员演奏过，而 Ian 则曾是更 Math Rock 的 Don Caballero 的成员——这些不同的流派经历有给你们的长期合作带来什么样的影响吗？
John：我们过去所参与的音乐团体极大地塑造了我们在 Battles 中对音乐的理解与创作方式。话虽如此，我们已经合作写歌超过 20 年了，从 1990 年代到现在，我们也都成长了许多。
These are musical groups from our past that have greatly shaped the way we interpret and write music for BATTLES. That being said we have been writing music together now for over 20 years and we have grown significantly since the 1990s.
UPEE：在最近两张专辑里，Battles 的声音有了更多电子的元素，可以分享这样的转变是出于什么契机吗？
John：在 Battles 刚成立的时候，我们就刻意尝试去重新诠释“独立摇滚乐队”的内涵。与其只是用吉他/贝斯/鼓，我们更决定进一步尝试电子元素。多年来，我们也一直努力让电子的运用更具创造性。
When BATTLES first started we went out of our way to reinterpret what being in an “indie rock band”meant. Rather than just using guitar/bass/drums we decided to experiment further using electronics. Over the years we have attempted to be more creative with the use of our electronics.
UPEE：在 Battles 给许多乐迷留下的印象里，“技术硬”和“复杂性兼具趣味”都是受到不少认可的共识——你们会如何看待创作、演奏里技术、审美、表达之间的关联?
John：好问题！对我来说，音乐本身追求一种在“严肃”与“好玩”之间的微妙平衡。我不认为复杂的音乐就一定要很严肃，它同样可以是轻松、有趣、好听的。
Great question! To me it is a subtle art form balancing between “serious” and “having fun”. I do not think complicated music always has to be serious, it can be playful and fun to listen too as well.
UPEE：长期以来 Battles 也有和许多国际上的不同文化背景的音乐人有进行合作，例如 Blonde Redhead 的日裔成员 Kazu Makino，日本音乐人 Yamantaka Eye，以及来自台湾的 落差草原 WWWW…… 跟不同文化背景的艺术家们来往、合作是什么感觉？可以分享这么多合作经历中，你们最难忘的一次吗？
John：我们在考虑合作时，完全是基于对合作音乐人他们音乐和氛围的兴趣，以及他们能为我们的音乐带来什么。Yes 乐队的 Jon Anderson 给我们寄来了人声时已经是 67 岁，我们将其用在了《Glass Drop》中，这实在太难以置信了！和我们的好朋友落差草原 WWWW 合作也同样令人难忘。
When we consider collaborations we are basing our interest purely in their music and vibe and what this particular artist could bring to our song. Jon Anderson from the group YES was 67 when he sent us vocals that we used on Glass Drop, it was incredible! It was also incredible to work with our dear friends PRAIRIE WWWW.
UPEE：除此之外你们还有哪些想要合作的音乐人？
John：我很想找到一些早已去世的音乐人的未发表作品来合作。
I would love to find some unreleased tracks from someone who has passed away long ago.
UPEE：距离 Battles 的上一张全长专辑《Juice B Crypts》已经过去了 6 年，乐队近期是否有发布新作的打算可否在此向乐迷们透露呢？
John：隐隐约约有听说 Battles 可能很快会有一张新专辑要发行……也有可能只是传闻啦。:)
I heard a rumor that maybe BATTLES has a new record that will come out soon…….but maybe this is just a rumor. :)
UPEE：2009 年 Battles 曾来到中国的几个城市进行演出，彼时你们的热场嘉宾是 P.K.14（北京上海两场）和 Lava Ox Sea（上海场），当时有留下什么印象深刻的事情吗？对于再次来到中国演出，有什么期待？
John：在中国的巡演是我们经历过的最棒的巡演之一，我们对能再次回到中国演出感到无比兴奋！！！
Playing in China was one of the greatest tours we have ever done and we are THRILLED to be coming back!!!
