Yes, we often incorporate pop elements in our production. And this isn't limited to pop genres. We don't confine ourselves to specific genres because they impose restrictions. We create music based on our feelings, doing what we like. All arrangements are dictated by our foundational acoustic base, which emerges during improvisations. If a song calls for pop elements, we simply go for it. We compose for ordinary people who may not even be familiar with something like Tuvan throat singing, and we focus precisely on musicality. To achieve this, we work extensively on enriching harmonies, structures, and various forms. We want Tuvan traditional music to be understandable and accessible to any listener. For this, we use the method: "Wow, this is something truly new and unique, yet so familiar at the same time." In our case, throat singing (khoomei) is the secret sauce in our music, not the foundation. We operate a bit differently. For us, music always comes first, and any genres are just spices that give our music a particular flavor.
I like to say that we don't find music; it finds us. It's born in the present moment. We don't deliberately sit down and compose it. Improvisation is our strength. The key element is our acoustic foundation—guitar, traditional instruments, vocals, and Tuvan throat singing. We meticulously work on acoustic arrangements first, ensuring they sound excellent even without production. We also perform acoustic concerts without electronics or modern technology. Only after our foundation becomes solid do we gradually and very carefully add modern elements like beats, synthesizers, and samples.
Traditional music is very fragile. It's easy to ruin. For example, a tasteless arrangement can easily destroy its uniqueness and authenticity.
Our ethnic identity lies in our traditional songs and musical traditions that have been created over centuries. We know, understand, and feel them deeply and treat them with great care. That's why we work so meticulously on arrangements to preserve these traditions. We don't hide them; instead, we enhance them, striving to make them richer and more vibrant.
Yes, that's true. This album is connected to our life experiences. We've been living far from home for two years now and, of course, miss home deeply. This feeling of noble longing inspired us to create the album "Nostalgia."
This release is more than just music. It's a luminous sadness transformed into sound: longing for native landscapes, the warmth of loved ones, and the unique cultural code that stays with us no matter where we are.
These songs tell the stories of those who have left but continue to carry love for their homeland. They speak of the importance of knowing where you come from and what traditions shape your path. Wherever you are, you're a part of your home. Nostalgia is a deeply personal yet universal tale about what it means to remember—to remember the scent of the native wind, the voices of loved ones, the shape of clouds over home.
The album's greatest strength lies in its sincerity. We don't just sing about nostalgia; we make you feel it physically.
This album is for those who:
·Have left but feel a connection to their homeland
·Are searching for themselves in a globalized world but want to preserve their uniqueness
·Believe that memories of home are not a burden but wings.
Since we live in different cities, we mostly worked remotely. I used to think this was impossible, but it turns out that with strong determination, anything is achievable.
Mengi specifically set up a home recording studio for this purpose and quickly learned how to record himself. This way, we recorded half the album. Either Mengi would come up with themes and send them to me for refinement, or I would send him demo material, and he'd send me his parts. Of course, this had its challenges. We couldn't feel each other as we do during live improvisations. So after 10 months, he flew to me in St. Petersburg, and we finished the album together.
Some songs we've been performing live for a long time, so updating them was easier.
The songs came to life in different ways. For example, the song "Is She Alone" was written in just two hours. Other songs took much longer—a year or more.
We recorded the album in two excellent studios in St. Petersburg. We could choose from several microphones or record with all of them to find that perfect sound. We took the recording process very seriously. It was great to work with new people since I'm usually the one doing all the recording.
After recording, I prepared the material and sent it to our sound producer, Misha Oshkanov, in Perm for mixing and mastering. We studied together and have been working on ODUCHU and other projects for several years. Misha polished everything to perfection and added his professional vision to the arrangements.
We're finally completely satisfied with the result.
You know, we love every song. Each has its own important story. They're all equally significant. We've poured our souls into every song, a part of ourselves. So it's hard to choose. Art should evoke emotions and memories. All the songs carry different emotions for all occasions. But personally, I can say that "Is She Alone" and "Nostalgia" have left a profound mark on my heart.
Yes, concerts are a whole other story. Although our project was initially created as a studio endeavor, we love performing live. Because it's during concerts that the true energy and atmosphere of our music come to life.
Our first tour in China was a success and left an indelible mark on our hearts.
People traveled specially to our concerts from other cities and provinces, making long journeys to experience our music live. We were deeply moved by this!
In Beijing, the energy was insane. The people were so beautiful! They came in their national attire. They sang, danced, jumped, and shouted along with us. It was incredibly fun! And the most interesting part was when the entire venue sang our song "Kongurei" in Tuvan with us at the end—a language known by only about 300,000 people worldwide. It was simply wow! We were pleasantly shocked. And it's moments like these that inspire us to keep going, to write more and more new music!
In Shanghai, the audience was more formal. No one jumped or shouted here. People came to listen to the music. And that was also very cool. You know, our music can be enjoyed in different ways. You can jump and dance, or you can listen thoughtfully, see images, and reflect on life. It was a very good experience.
In Chengdu, everything was also great. We were warmly received there. People danced, sang along, and even cried...
From the stage, I noticed a woman in the front rows crying for some reason. After the concert, she came up to us and shared her story.
She had a friend who listened to our music and really wanted to attend a concert. But he never got to see us perform. He passed on to another world. And the woman came to our concert to honor his memory and listen to us. In tears, she told us how much he had wanted to be there (at the concert). But he couldn't make it and never would. She came in his place. The woman thanked us for the concert and the music and wished us continued success.
A sad story... We express our condolences for her loss and hope that everything will be okay.
Different stories happen at our concerts. Some find love, some propose marriage. Some rejoice, some grieve. That's life. And there's a lot of life at our concerts. So come to our concerts to feel Life.
