We both joined the grope to learn Goshu Ondo (a traditional singing style) in 2017 and as we were trying to learn the same song from the same master’s recordings, I(Agatha) started to sing in harmony with Miyuki as I love making harmony by nature.
I don’t know.. I just come by flow. One thing that is sure is that those traditional folk songs felt more attractive that other pop songs or my own original songs or any other. I am not trying to make something “modern” in particular because I live and grew up in this modern world. lol
Well, it has allowed us to perform in China, for a start! That is special.
To be very honest, I don’t have a special connection with Japanese traditional music. I didn’t grew up with that. But I think the lyrics of those Japanese traditional folk songs feel like scenery or a landscape. I don’t like to sing out somebody’s or even my own personal emotions, but in that point, singing like scenery feels like I am allowed to do so.
There is a famous English nursery rhyme called “Who Killed Cock Robin” from “Mother Goose”. In that rhyme a Sparrow answers he killed Cock Robin with his bow and arrow.
And also in the lyrics of our first track “Kawaigaranse”, there is a line saying “the Samurai has his bow in his hand, and his arrows on his waist.”
I found those two images’ link interesting.
Remon Nakanishi (he’s coming with us this time) is a brilliant singer and I produced his album which is also of Japanese traditional folk songs. We often perform together, so we are like a team.
Tomoko Kageyama, she is a brilliant vibraphone/marimba player. I has so moved by her musicianship through the recording. I feel still enchanted by here vibraphone’s sound captured in our tracks.
As for Suzumeno Tears, I can’t think of any at the moment...
This is our first time performing outside Japan, not only in China. So I feel nervous about how the Chinese audience will react, but we will do our best of course!
I am a big fan of those dumplings(小龍包 餃子) we eat them in Japan too, but I am excited to eat the authentic Chinese dumplings/dim sum.
